The Five Precepts ( Panca Sila )

3.

Panatipata veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I take the precept to abstain from killing.

Sabbesu panabhutesu hitasukhataya patipanno bhavami.
I will act for the welfare and happiness of all beings.

Adinnadana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami.
I take the precept to abstain from stealing.

Muttacago payatapani danasamvibhagarato bhavami.
I will be generous, open-handed and take delight in
sharing.

Kamesu miccha cara veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami.
I take the precept to abstain from sexual misconduct.

Ajjhattam c'eva bahiddha ca suddham kayam pariharami.
I will care for the body, keeping it pure in all ways.

Musavada veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami.
I take the precept to abstain from lying.

Sacco mudu sanhavaco kalyanavakkarano bhavami.
I will speak the truth, words mild, pleasant and noble.

Surameraya-majja-pamadatthana veramani sikkhapadam
samadiyami.
I take the precept to abstain from intoxicating drinks
and drugs.

Suddham cittam suppabuddham anavilam pariharami.
I will care for the mind, keeping it pure, alert and
unconfused.
