We
live in a world inseparable from the law of conditionality, interdependence and
interrelatedness, which inevitably would give rise to imperfections and
suffering, the 1st Noble Truth.
Our
lives are fundamentally intertwined with the lives of others, sharing the same
confinement of living space and the aspiration to seek happiness.
The
1st precept of no killing is to refrain us from mutual destruction of ourselves
and to take away the lives of other living beings. Recognising that all of us
have basic human needs, we cannot hope to follow this precept perfectly to
avoid all killings. Even the most consciousness vegan gardener cannot
completely avoid killing insects in the soil.
Although
we cannot avoid these killings, we still have to ask ourselves, how can we live
without being out of the world, yet with compassion that motivates us to
minimize pain we inflict? We cannot have it both ways, but as we gradually see
the world as it is, we begin to live in the present.
Nothing
is worth more than “now”.
