In our daily lives, everybody has had the
experience of standing and sitting. Most people have had the experience of
taking public buses or Mass Rapid Transport (MRT). Everyone who boards the bus or
train would automatically think of finding a seat. When seated, all the pain of
standing would be forgotten.
‘The one sitting will not know the pain of
those standing.’
This phase has a very profound meaning to it.
It is not difficult to find similar examples in our daily lives. A very obvious
example is: Parents work hard to support their children but some children even
complain that their parents do not love them enough or that there are too many
restrictions etc. such as the example of ‘the one sitting will not know the
pain of those standing.’
From the viewpoint of Buddha Dhamma, it is –
always care for the feelings of sentient beings. In our multi-cultural society,
everybody has different encounters. There are hardworking people, poor people
and peaceful people due to their different background. What can we do is to
offer our strength and work hard.
In any corner of the world, there are people
standing or sitting, it is difficult to expect equality for all people. Some
people never stand or just stand occasionally but when sitting down, the pain
of standing is immediately forgotten. In Buddha Dhamma, bodhisattavas had
tasted the sufferings of sentient beings and so vowed to save them through
passing the enlightened Buddha Dhamma.
Those sitting should care for those standing.
Give up your seat to the aged, the very young and the pregnant. To care for the
people standing will make our world a warmth, caring and peaceful place to
live.
